My Story
I didn't grow up dreaming of being an actuary (although I'm not sure many people do). What I did know was that I loved solving puzzles, understanding how things work, and finding better ways to do them.
Mathematics came naturally, and when I discovered that actuarial science was a career that let you combine analytical thinking with real business problems, I knew where to head.
My career has taken me across life insurance, life annuities, reinsurance, and retail investments. I've always been drawn to the question of how we build things that work better — for customers, for businesses, for colleagues. That curiosity led me into product innovation, where I found myself less interested in whether we could build something and more interested in whether we should. I started asking different questions: who is this really for? What problem are we actually solving? And more often than not, sitting with those questions changed the direction entirely.
Along the way, I discovered that the technical skills are only half the picture. The work I'm most proud of has involved bringing people together, building teams, improving processes, and finding ways to use technology to free people up to do more meaningful work. I lead with a people-first approach because I've seen what happens when you trust your team and give them the space to grow.
Volunteering
When I was about eight years old, my father talked me into joining the local Scout Group. I protested, naturally, but it turned out to be one of the most important things that ever happened to me. Scouting taught me about teamwork and leadership long before I knew those were "skills."
I stuck with it all the way through to earning the Springbok Top Award, and somewhere along the line, I went from being a young Scout to volunteering as an adult leader. One of my proudest chapters was helping grow a small, hidden Scout group in Cape Town into a vibrant centre of scouting in the district.
Outside of work, I'm also a swimming coach for adults from under-resourced communities, and a crisis counsellor. These experiences have shaped me just as much as anything in my professional career. They've taught me that showing up for your community matters, and that the best version of yourself isn't built behind a desk. It's built through service, challenge, and genuine human connection.
